Why The Iron Claw was the Best Movie of 2023
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 місяці тому
The Iron Claw received no Academy Award nominations. It earned less than a twentieth of Barbie's total box office. But The Iron Claw was my favorite movie of 2023. The film could've been nothing more than an effective, bleak tragedy, but Sean Durkin finds home hope amidst the sorrow. In this video, I breakdown the survival of Kevin Von Erich, and why it makes The Iron Claw a truly superb piece ...

The Lessons To Be Learned from Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One is one of the best movies of 2023. On paper, Toho's latest Godzilla entry should be little more than an entertaining, two hours of destruction, but it is much more. I never hear people talking about this but one of the things I love the most about the John Wick series is how it really plays on the fact that Keanue Reeves is actually a terrible actor. He’s probably the most decent human being in Hollywood but he’s TERRIBLE at acting & he’s clearly aware of it. The whole series is obviously a nod to the 80s Action Movie Hero ridiculousness but Keanue adds something extra by really embracing his complete inability to convey any emotion in a believable way & just runs with it. Trust me once you realize he’s actually making fun of himself in A LOT of the scenes, it’s a completely different viewing experience.

It's not as though Tolkien's world didn't have morally grey characters-- look at Feanor or Turin -- but even they follow the mythic archetypes of Tragedy. These ROP writers are only looking surface level at the material (Middle Earth as "content") and putting their modern sensibilities on it.

This film is indeed glorious. You however are overthinking the main theme which is the way of Grace or Nature and which one should prevail. He also gives us an answer in the love everyone feels for R. L. the artistic son who dies. When the mother asks God "Where were you" during her grief, that triggers the creation sequence which in my mind is God saying I was creating all this.............. which lead to you. Absolutely love Malik, his message is so subtle and yet so strong.

I do think demonizing someone completely is just as dangerous as deifying him. It seperates his actions from humanity, making it less likely anyone can believe a person can do such harm. Making it likely someone else like him can rise again. Just as we avoid worshiping celebraties and especially politicians, we need to avoid demonizing and dehumanizing cruel people. Because they are people, they are real, they aren't mythological.

I've read this film was shown to German teens and it wasn't a great hit bc the pianist was so passive. Never fought back, witnessed the ghetto uprising from behind the wall. Helpless, depending on others. My memory of this film is the pianist's friend who jeered at the Germans who were incarcerated by the Soviets, then regreted it.

Never watched the movie...but, I volunteered and when I experienced boot camp, it was enlightening that we were working class or "loser" class. Most of us anyway. There was abusive humor in the way DIs treated us. I understand that the process was intended to reduce our understanding that we were separate, individual characters and the intention was to cause us to think as a group or a unit. That is what basic seemed to me. The DIs were, along with other objectives, looking for the guys that were irreparable and pointing that "flaw" out to the rest of us. It turned out that i was one of the 'flawed Marines". I wasn't childlike, or illiterate. I wanted to be a "good" Marine but unfortunately, the boot camp programing didn't sink in. My cynicism remained intact during the training and the absurdity of what that training was supposed to accomplish failed on my account. I volunteered for Vietnam but as I have reflected back on that time, I think of myself as less of a warrior and more of a tourist. Being a killer was anathema to my young soul.

No point in looking for deep philosophical meaning in a war that was purposely LOST from the beginning thanks to WEAK politicians. Americans started, then capitulated at the same time, in 1965. What came later were just "exercises" and "war games" with live ammo. They were not willing to do what needed to be done to WIN the war. I suspect they were going for a stalemate, like in Korea, where the country would be demarcated. That sure didn't work. Just like decades later in Afghanistan. American war record: 2 wins, WW1 and 2, one tie, Korea, 2 losses, Vietnam and Afghanistan. Plot that on a curve and it just keeps going DOWN.

I think to understand Apocalypse Now it really helps to read Heart of Darkness. Ultimately, both stories are about comparing the occupiers with the natives. People think the natives are savages, and they think we are civilized, but really, the natives are no worse than we are. The Vietnamese were almost exclusively represented as sympathetic. You can see this especially in the boat massacre scene. We are meant to think, "we're no better than they are". Kilgore isn't any better of a person that Kurtz. That is the real point. Kilgore is clearly psychopathic, he clearly doesn't think twice about massacring an entire village just so that he can surf. He just had the optics that the army wanted, and Kurtz didn't. That's their difference. And that is a reflection of the entire war. The north Vietnamese didn't have the optics the US wanted, the south Vietnamese did.

Collateral and Leon did it way better. Even the Hitman games are better. But ironically The Killer is the closest thing to Hitman and assassins IRL. Just listening to you describe The Killer “storyline” makes it very misleading, just as the trailer did. It’s really not that deep, not a good story at all, while Collateral is an absolute masterpiece as is Leon The Professional.
